Lead Server Scalability Engineer

About us:

Aptana is about cutting-edge infrastructure for modern, Ajax-based web applications. We already have the leading Ajax IDE in the market (over 1.5M downloads)... . We've recently launched the world's first true Ajax server, Jaxer, and it's getting strong traction. And now we're building out a third product that will take our goal of "End to End Ajax" even further. By the way, our company was founded by Paul Colton, who built JRun, the first (and wildly successful) Java servlet and JSP server; and Nico Nierenberg, the founder and chairman of Actuate. And we're well funded by Accel Partners.

What we are looking for:

  • An accomplished engineer/architect that's led the development of a significant server-side product
  • Someone who can design and build a scalable, extensible server using C/C++
  • Someone for whom scalability, performance, and interoperability are right up there with breathing and eating
  • Someone that insists on keeping their hands dirty and building cool stuff
  • Someone who believes that they (with a small team) can build *anything*
  • Someone who enjoys taking on difficult tasks
  • An out-of-the-box creative thinker

The Opportunity:

Reponsibilities:

  • Architect and build *a lot* of code, in C/C++, and possibly also Java and other languages. If you don't love and want to code, please don't apply.
  • Design and build the product. Make it happen.
  • Mentor other engineers
  • Defend your own ideas and pick away at other people's
  • Be wrong every now and then

Desired Qualifications:

  • You have at least 8 years of experience building products (writing code)
  • Experience writing tight yet highly maintainable code
  • Thorough understanding of threading, caching, and technologies related to web server scalability and performance
  • Experience hacking on Mozilla, Apache web server, Tomcat, JBoss, and other open source server technologies
  • Familiarity with existing web frameworks for application development (Ruby on Rails, Spring, Struts, Hibernate, PHP)
  • Familiarity with server-side design paradigms (interoperability, session management, security, REST, persistence, lifecycles, etc.)

Web Developer

  • Loves web development, and is fascinated with what's going on in Web 2.0
  • Is interested in finding ways to make web development easier.
  • Is interested in building an incredibly dynamic and empowered online community that promotes learning and sharing
  • Is wise enough to know when to re-use and/or hack existing web site components to do what's needed versus writing them anew
  • Insists on keeping their hands dirty and building cool stuff
  • Someone who likes to poke around with new tools and technologies, but who also knows how to put their head down and get stuff done
  • Someone who could build the equivalent of a web-based iTunes on their own

  • Create a community based website for the massive "Web 2.0" or Ajax developer community to:
    • share experiences
    • learn new development techniques
    • provide feedback on our products

Responsibilities:

  • Create a website that captures and retains the attention of busy developers.
  • Choose the framework for the community site and code it from the ground up. (write lots of code)
  • Interface with users to figure out what they want and hack it in
  • Ensure the site integrates seamlessly with Aptana Studio
  • Own our corporate website
  • Collaborate with and/or manage interaction and visual designers to ensure ease of use.
  • As much as possible, use our own tools to build and maintain the site (i.e. eat our own dog food)

Desired Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years experience developing websites using the latest and greatest tools: Ruby on Rails, PHP, mysql, Ajax, Javascript, CSS, dynamic languages, wikis, bug tracking systems, open source development, blog tools, code sharing, feeds, RSS, mashups, etc.
  • Very strong technical acumen and aptitude
  • Passion for building community oriented websites
  • Bachelor's in Computer Science or equivalent
  • Strong work ethic
  • A strong sense of "what works" on the web that is informed by experience.

Jaxer JavaScript Architect

What we are looking for:

  • An accomplished engineer that has led the development of substantial product that has already made an impact -- or at least should have
  • A JavaScript wizard who eats, drinks, and breathes JavaScript and dynamic web apps
  • A JavaScript wizard for whom Jaxer is the Holy Grail (or at least could be, if only he/she were on it...)
  • Someone that insists on keeping their hands dirty and building cool stuff
  • Someone who believes that they (and a small team) can build *anything*
  • An out-of-the-box creative thinker
  • Someone with a track record of solving complicated problems with simple, elegant solutions

  • You've spent a lot of time hacking JavaScript in a web environment and enjoy it.
  • You are fired up about what's going on in Ajax and just *know* it can be done better, and want to do something about it.
  • You are familiar with some existing server-side web frameworks for application development (Ruby and Rails, Java and Spring, PHP)
  • You are familiar with server-side design paradigms (session management, security, REST, persistence, lifecycles, etc.)
  • You've built cool re-usable technology that other engineers love and use every day (Development Frameworks and or libraries, IDEs, servers, etc).
